Help promote our August AIR show - July 23, 2007
Hi everyone, I think that the Adobe AIR bus coming to our area is sort of a big deal, so I'd like to do what I can to promote it. All the information is on our webpage under the next meeting, but I've also made a SWF and printable PDF flyer to pass around and promote the event. Please tell your co-workers and friends to go to www.rdaug.org/airshow And it would be great if you could print out that color or black and white PDF available on that page to hang on your office fridge. Thanks everyone! ben

RDAUG Summer Update - July 9, 2007
Hi everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful July 4th holiday. I'm writing to tell you about a couple new things, and to request some help with RDAUG.

First, the biggest thing is the new website. We've had it live for awhile, but I just had to thank and congratulate Tony Chester for designing, HTMLizing, and copy editing the site - thereby winning the website contest prize of up to $2100 worth of Adobe software. I'd also like to thank Brian Soles for his great RDAUG logo.

Additionally, I've been very busy sorting out all this confusing Yahoo groups and forums business. Please read about the changes at http://www.rdaug.org/about/mailandforuminfo.cfm Basically, forum members can not only get an RSS feed of our forum topics, but also real emails which can even be customized if you care about some RDAUG topics but not others. Also, emailing forums@rdaug.org will create forum posts in the RDAUG chat section. Last but not least, is that our Yahoo Groups Members are not left out. Forum posts will be emailed to our Yahoo list, and Yahoo posts will be sent to the forum. This isn't 100% perfect because of Yahoo's over-agressive spam filters. They tend to block large ranges of IP addresses. But this is the best we can do, and I'll make sure that Yahoo gets at least the important news. This was a problem before the forums existed, and some members weren't getting or able to post things. I'd like to steer everybody to the forums, but just know that Yahoo groups will still work.

Next is the subject of meetings. Meetings have been a little light this summer. I've been focusing my efforts on getting our forums working well and putting our website up, and unfortunately that took a great deal of my focus for this group. I was also a little averse to getting the groups momentum up when online communication was such a mess. Well, hopefully things are stable now, and I'd really like to get some great meetings planned.

Kicking things off in August is the onAIR Bus Tour. On the 18th of August several Adobe higher-ups including Ben Forta, Mike Chambers, and Ted Patrick will be stopping in RTP to give our group a presentation of AIR (formerly Apollo). I'll post the official announcement when I get exact times and the agenda from Adobe.

In September, I'd like to get regular meetings back on track at a reasonably stable time and place. The place is still open, and if your company can host us every month I'd love to hear from you. Otherwise, I'm scoping out the local libraries (surprisingly, it sounds like they have some decent presentation space!). I have one presenter lined up for September, but I'd love to get tons more lined up for the rest of the year, so if you are knowledgable in something the group could benefit from we'd absolutely LOVE to hear from you!

Last is my general plea for help. A few of you have been helping a great deal, and a few have offered help. But as I said before, I was a little averse trying to grow the group until we got a website and messaging system that made sense. Now that I have that (and my fingers ARE crossed), I'd love to get help. The biggest and easiest thing you can do for me is ideas. Maybe you have an idea for a meeting, or would like me to find a presenter on something you'd like to know more about. Even negative feedback on something you hate about the group is encouraged.

The biggest help would be getting involved (not just talking but doing). Maybe you can give a presentation, or bring an expert on something from your company. I'm personally interested in finding somebody to talk about Microsoft Silverlight, but maybe there's something else you can present on as well. Maybe you're looking for a job, and would like something to put on your resume. I'd certainly be open to taking on a "vice president" or "committee members", if you'd like to take on some aspect of planning or plotting different aspects of RDAUG.

I guess my grand theme here is that I did what I set out to do, and now my goals are to simply grow the group. And I'm open to help, ideas, and participation.

Thanks everyone, have a great summer. Hope to see you all at the July TACFUG meeting and the onAIR Bus tour.
Your group manager,
Ben Gomez Farrell

No July Meeting, but Big August Meeting - June 19, 2007
Hey everyone, I realized that I'm incredibly busy in July (I'm going to California twice). After talking to a couple members at our last meeting, I realized that July is a busy month for a lot of folks. So maybe skipping a month is a good idea, especially if I can't put much time and effort into it. It will give me a chance to get RDAUG running uber smoothly by the time August comes around. I wanted to give you folks a heads up for our August meeting as well. Its looking like another RDAUG/CAUG/TACFUG event. We're going to have an AIR contest, the best entry will get a prize, so get working for mid-August! It looks like, that as of today, there will be a certain bus tour coming around to us. I'll let you folks no more as the details are set, but just wanted to give a heads up to participate in our little contest! Thanks everyone!

Summer Meetings - May 15, 2007
Hi everyone, the summer meeting schedule is getting a bit unpredictable. So for those who need a disciplined 2nd Tuesday of the month schedule, I do apologize. Between different locations, guest speakers, etc.... I can't predict the specific dates of future meetings in the short term. So PLEASE keep an eye on our webpage, google calendar, Yahoo Groups list, or the forums. Thanks!

The Porn community finally found us! - May 15, 2007
Well, allowing users to directly post their member profiles, jobs, and projects on our site had to quickly come to an end. I'm getting a steady stream of porno ads now from the submission forms. Oh well, I thought we'd be OK for longer....but don't let this stop you from posting jobs, your profile, or your projects on our site, just know that I have to preview it first before it gets posted!

No April RDAUG meetings - April 11th, 2007
I should have updated the website earlier, but as I told everyone at the last meeting, there is no April RDAUG meeting. Don't worry, we're still here, and not going away. In fact, I'm psyched to see so many new people attending meetings. Anyway, we had TWO meetings in March, so I thought it would be a great time to take a break and not exhaust everyone with too many RDAUG meetings. Thanks for your support everyone, and see you in May!

Brand New RDAUG Site - March 19th, 2007
Our site is brand new, and looking great thanks (design and markup courtesy Tony Chester and Onwired). The brand new site is in it's early stages though. It'll keep looking the same, but keep getting better. We hope to get expand our resources page into a mini site of it's own with our members' help. We also hope to get our jobs, member directory, and showcase all updated with our memebers' help. Hopefully we'll turn our little site from something that educates outsiders about RDAUG into something our members check every day. Thanks everyone for your help!

RDAUG's temporary website - October 25th, 2006
There's so much information to tell our members and future members. We have deals and freebies from Adobe, book publishers and more. We have meetings and contests and prizes. So rather than waiting for the new website to be done to tell you all about this, we created this website in the meantime to keep everyone informed. We'll have even more stuff when the website does launch but in the meantime you can keep tabs on the goings on with this temporary website.

RDAUG Forums - October 25th, 2006
RDAUG has a new way to communicate! The RDAUG Forums at http://www.rdaug.org/forums is ready for your questions, announcments, and discussion. Newcomers and old-time RDAUG members alike are welcome to sign up and post!

Oh yah, and there's new Fireworks and Soundbooth Betas, but I haven't seen the demos so I can't vouch for them yet! http://weblogs.macromedia.com/labs/archives/2008/05/new_dreamweaver_fireworks_and_soundbooth_betas_released_on_labs.html

Of course the necessary features are in there - Vista and Intel Mac support, and Flash 9 compatibility (good luck doing any Flex stuff in MX 2004!). Konfabulator goes Flash - November 29, 2007
http://weblogs.macromedia.com/jd/archives/2007/11/konfabulator_go_1.cfm I know that some of you were asking about widget development before - I don't really know a thing about it, so I don't know if Konfabulator through Yahoo is what you folks are after, but Konfabulator now supports Flash 9!

Adobe's John Dowdell writes: Sort of a historical moment here. Konfabulator was one of the first popular desktop widget systems. It was originally an only-on-Macintosh architecture, using system-level AppleScript for interactivity. Later they added Windows through some other scripting mechanism, and joined Yahoo to become the basis of their desktop widget system. Now they're adding support for Adobe Flash Player, which is the fastest way to get high-level cross-environment support. Cool, welcome! I can't pull up the Yahoo Widgets Blog at the moment, but Mike Potter was early on with the news... Niall Kennedy has a short history of widgets (wijstory?)... here's my archive of Konfabulator posts. Potential win: If you make tools in SWF, it now seems easier to reach the Yahoo desktop audience, just as you reach lots of other audiences.

Flash Player 10 Sneak Preview at MAX - October 2, 2007
Pretty cool stuff in this video at http://aralbalkan.com/1048

The Flash player team discusses multicolumn/multilanguage text formatting features. They also talk about the new 3D capabilities which seem to basically mean being able to rotate in X,Y,Z coordinates. And lastly they talk about the new ability to program your own pixel shaders in the project codenamed Hydra. This gives you the ability to not only use a Blur, Shadow, or Glow filter as you could do in Flash 8, but also write your own filters...you'll have to see it to know what I'm talking about!

More announcements from MAX - October 1, 2007
With MAX going on, I think we can expect a lot to be announced over the coming days, and we started off strong with Flex, AIR, and AMP. Heres some announcements I just came across: First is that Adobe is acquiring Virtual Ubiquity, the makers of a web based word processor. Looks like those AIR/Office rumors we were discussing on the list weren't so far off! http://www.adobe.com/special/buzzword/faq.html And secondly Adobe has released some tidbits about Flash Lite 3 (which will support FLV!): http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/
