Online Communication with RDAUG
You may have noticed that there are a few different ways of online communication with RDAUG. First there's the RDAUG Yahoo! Groups Mailing List. Second, there's the RDAUG Forums. Third, there is information constantly being updated on the RDAUG website (jobs, meeting announcements, RDAUG news, Adobe news, etc).
Originally at RDAUG, our online communication was only through Yahoo Groups. When I took over RDAUG, I found out that it occasionally took all day for messages to get through, and I still believe that some members don't receive messages sent through Yahoo!. So I decided to try to improve this system.
This is why I created the RDAUG forums. The forums are a hopefully a nicer way for everyone to communicate. I've heard lots of positive feedback on the forums, and I hope everyone likes them! There are two RSS feeds, one feed to keep up to date on the latest discussions threads, and another comprehensive RSS feed to keep up on all new threads AND new posts.
As lovely as I think the forums are, I have also received a little feedback that some members may not choose to use RSS...and some even prefer to stick with the Yahoo! Groups. Of course I want to make everyone happy, so I've made my best effort for get Yahoo! Groups and our RDAUG forums working together so that members can use either and be kept up to date on everything happening at RDAUG and Adobe.
Using RDAUG forums
Members who wish to subscribe to the RDAUG forums can do so by signing up at http://www.rdaug.org/forums. Here, you can read, post, chat, and do everything you'd expect from a forum. New messages from our members who choose to use Yahoo! Groups will appear as new threads or replies to existing threads. Also, new jobs, Adobe related news, RDAUG news, RDAUG meeting information, and member showcase submissions that were posted to the RDAUG website will also be posted as new threads on our forums.
The forums offer a little more customization however. With Yahoo! Groups, you get all messages relating to RDAUG emailed to you. Our forums now have a way to subscribe via email, and you can choose what types of messages you get. For example if only the RDAUG meeting announcements interest you, as a forum member you can choose to be emailed when the next meeting is announced. If you'd like to turn this email subscription feature on, simply edit your member preferences on our forum. You will see the following screen:
Simply check the types of messages you'd like to receive on your email account that is registered with our forums. Members of our forums (and only members of our forums) can send new threads or reply to forums@rdaug.org and their messages will appear as new threads or replies to current threads. You will only be allowed to send emails to our forum if you send your email from the account registered with our forums.
Using Yahoo! Groups
Members who wish to subscribe to Yahoo! Groups may do so by visiting http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/rdaug/. Yahoo! Groups members can choose to be subscribed through email to each post as it comes through, a daily digest of posts, or simply no email at all. Topics in our RDAUG forums will simply come through as new emails to the Yahoo! Group. Also, new jobs, Adobe related news, RDAUG news, RDAUG meeting information, and member showcase submissions that were posted to the RDAUG website will also be posted to Yahoo!. Likewise, replying to these messages through Yahoo! groups will email the yahoo groups and add a reply post in our forums, and writing new message topics to Yahoo! Groups will create new threads in our forum. I highly encourage you to use our forums however, as they are more customizable and reliable. Occasionally Yahoo! will reject posts from our members or even our forums posts because of it's over-aggressive spam filters. I'll be keeping an eye on this to try to ensure all RDAUG messaging, or at least the most important ones, makes it through.
Our Apologies for any technical difficulties
I'm very pleased this system is in place now. RDAUG's online communication has been a little weird since the forums were introduced in October 2006, since basically there were two separate groups of people talking to themselves. I've been manually trying to keep the same discussion going in both places during this time. I hope this will end the transitional period, however this system is very recently put into place. I'd like to invite you to report anything that doesn't work or that doesn't make sense to admin@rdaug.org. This has been a long time coming for us, and I've taken my sweet time programming and working this out to make sure everything works, and while I hope everything is smooth, chances are something may go wrong. Please do let me know.
Thanks!
Your fearless group leader, Ben Gomez Farrell.
